Suspect charged with attempted murder after 5 shot near mosque

Toronto Police have arrested a suspect who allegedly shot five men outside a mosque after evening prayers this spring.

On Saturday, April 16, 2022, at 1 a.m., police were called for a shooting in the Markham Rd. and Lawrence Ave. E. area where a group of men had gathered in a plaza parking lot to decide where to go and eat when they were fired at from a vehicle.

Police have arrested Muhammad Ashan Naseer, 20, of Toronto, for this shooting.

At the time of his arrest on Monday, he was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm in his wasteband.

Police haven’t yet determined if it was the same gun used to shoot the five men.

Nasseer is known to police, but they haven’t commented on a motive in this shooting.

Naseer has been charged with five counts of attempt murder, discharge firearm with intent to wound, endanger life or prevent arrest, two counts of possess restricted or prohibited firearm without holding a licence and registration certificate, two counts of possess restricted or prohibited firearm knowingly not holding a licence and registration certificate, two counts of occupy motor vehicle with firearm, two counts of possess loaded regulated firearm, possess prohibited/restricted,prohibited device knowing no authority, and possess firearm with altered serial number.
