2022 MLB playoffs: Bracket, scores, schedule as Padres, Phillies and Astros advance; Yankees face elimination
Saturday’s packed playoff schedule began with the elimination of the World Series defending champion Atlanta Braves, and it ended with the ousting of the 111-win Los Angeles Dodgers who were favored to win this year’s title.
So that leaves the plucky Philadelphia Phillies and surprising San Diego Padres, who took out the Braves and Dodgers in Game 4 of their respective National League Division Series Saturday. The two teams will open the National League Championship Series in San Diego on Tuesday night.
Not to be outdone, the two ALDS games also featured plenty of high drama. The Houston Astros swept the Seattle Mariners on the strength of an 18-inning home run by Jeremy Peña, which was the lone run in the longest scoreless postseason game in MLB history. The Cleveland Guardians, meanwhile, walked off the New York Yankees with three runs in the bottom of the ninth of Game 3 to take a 2-1 series lead. Game 4 of that best-of-five series will take place in Cleveland on Sunday night.
These playoffs began with 12 teams, but the Mets, Cardinals, Blue Jays and Rays were eliminated last weekend in the Wild Card Series. The top two teams in each league (the Astros and Yankees in the American League and the Dodgers and Braves in the National League) received byes and started their postseason journeys in the LDS round on Tuesday. With the Wild Card Series and three of the four Division Series in the books, the high stakes best-of-seven League Championship Series will start in San Diego on Tuesday and in Houston on Wednesday. The best-of-seven World Series is scheduled to start on Friday, Oct. 28.
