Soccer star Danny Hodgson takes heartbreaking turn

The adored soccer player who was allegedly bashed in Northbridge earlier this month is now battling a brain infection and internal bleeding.

Danny Hodgson’s mother Nicola said in a Facebook post her son was facing new hurdles after undergoing surgery, however she has refused to give up hope.

The 26-year-old is in a serious condition at Royal Perth Hospital after he was allegedly punched by a 15-year-old in Perth’s party precinct.

His parents received a special exemption to travel to WA from the UK to be by their son’s bedside.

Despite his loved ones reporting recent signs of progress, the ECU Joondalup athlete appears to have taken a heartbreaking turn today.

Mrs Hodgson described the journey as an emotional rollercoaster — from the highs of being able to touch her son after her stint in quarantine, to the lows of accepting the reality of what he had to overcome in order to survive.

She said doctors were also trying to find the source of an internal bleed.

“As I sit and watch him, hold his hand and hug him, I can’t help but think about how different his life was three weeks ago,” Mrs Hodgson wrote.

She said the alleged attack had left communities around the world devastated.

Ms Hodgson said there were small windows where her son had been conscious and smiled.

“It’s these moments that are keeping us all going … I know my son is a fighter, I have every faith that he will get through this,” she said.

The mother thanked everyone for their support and asked people to keep him in their thoughts and prayers.

The community has shown an outpouring of support for the young soccer star and his family.

Earlier this month a Scottish pipe band played outside Mr and Mrs Hodgson’s hotel window. The pair were seen waving from the top story of the Pan Pacific.

The 26-year-old’s soccer friends and work mates waved to the couple from below.

Friends of Mr Hodgson have described the young soccer player as a great mate with a bright future.
