The Mid West Ports Authority is looking to take steps towards reconciliation, forming a working group to devise an action plan.
The working group is seeking a volunteer to help in developing initiatives in line with recommendations from Reconciliation Australia.
“MWPA currently consults with local Aboriginal organisations on port operations as appropriate, has an Aboriginal representative on its stakeholder engagement committee, and engages with key community members for consultation and advice as required,” general manager of sustainability, culture and people Vickie Williams said. The City Of Greater Geraldton developed a reconciliation action plan in 2017.
A review survey found 82 per cent of respondents had gained at least some knowledge of local Aboriginal history.
“When we talk about reconciliation, we are talking about a process of building and strengthening respectful relationships between the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community that enables us to work together to close the gaps and to achieve a shared sense of fairness and justice,” Mayor Shane Van Styn said.
