Grants to upskill regional communities

With a skills shortage affecting the regions, every new trainee taken on is a step on the path out. Two small town groups have been enabled to do just that.

The Community Resource Centres in Dongara and Mullewa are the recipients of $37,000 from the State Government to support trainees in business, and community service vocations.

“This program is providing tailored support to address the needs of individual communities, while supporting local people to develop their skills and careers in the regions,” Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan said.

The funding is offered once a year in a competitive program which sees more than 100 CRCs vying for grants.

“The trainee we were lucky enough to employ via the previous round is still currently employed at the Dongara CRC and is nearing completion of their certification. We have two other staff members who have previously completed traineeships, myself included,” Dongara CRC manager Sarah Samulkiewicz-Taylor said.

Trainees will receive on-the-job training in Certificate III courses, covering a broad spectrum of client bases and skill sets.
