Children get their own ‘calm corner’ at primary school

The sheltered space with benches and artificial turf to give them a quiet place to sit during break time was revealed during an open day at Hunters Hall Primary School in Dagenham.
It was formally opened by Barking and Dagenham mayor Faruk Choudhury. The open day featured Romford’s Royal British Legion band and Corps of Drums and Rumford Morris dancers, as well as Bollywood, African, Romanian and Irish dancing and music from African drums, steel pans and gospel and reggae choirs.
“The calm corner gives the children their space to collect their thoughts,” Bellway Homes director Dan Brady said. “We teamed up with our contractors when staff at Hunters Hall came to us for help to create the quiet zone for children.”
The company is developing the Eastbrooke and Fielders Quarter schemes as part of the massive Barking Riverside regeneration at the former power station site, where 10,800 new homes are being built.
