‘Buzz’ on Sutton High Street as shoppers return amid restriction ease

Shoppers rushed to Sutton High Street on Monday as non-essential retailers reopened across England.

It comes after Boris Johnson confirmed that stage two of the roadmap can go ahead – allowing shops to reopen after more than three months of closures.

Today (April 12) shops reopened their doors along the high street and in St Nicholas Shopping Centre which saw busy scenes in Sutton this afternoon.

Resident Mr Vázquez-Phillips said it was “nice to see the high street busy again” as he took a picture of the scenes at 1.30 pm.

He said: “I’ve worked in Sutton for many years and with the lack of shops it was beginning to feel like a ghost town.

“Hopefully, it’s only up from here. We’ve had a few new businesses open over the lockdown so thankfully they can get people through the doors now.”

One commenter said: “I went to Sutton. My kids were in desperate need of new clothes.

“We wore masks inside, hand sanitised on way in and out.

“Not much more you can do. And I have to say, even though it was heaving with people, it was so nice for a bit of normality again!”

Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Scully also welcomed residents back onto the high street.

He wrote on Twitter: “There seems to be a buzz on Sutton High Street with people enjoying a return to shopping and outdoor hospitality.”

Not everyone understood the desire to be back on the high street.

One person said: “Can’t understand the rush and queue for cheap rubbish Primark … can only say I’ve not missed it one bit.”

Another person said: “Looks like xmas sales! Couldn’t be doing that today.”
