Daniel Craig awarded same royal honour as 007 at investiture ceremony

Daniel Craig has received one of the royals‘ top honours.

The actor, most famous for his role as James Bond, was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle on Tuesday.

It’s the same honour held by the fictional character he’s famous for playing, 007, according to writer Ian Fleming’s From Russia With Love.

In the novel, a Soviet spy chief notes Bond was given the CMG in 1953, saying it’s “an award usually given only on retirement from the Secret Service”.

In reality, the honour is usually given to diplomats, spies and Brits working abroad, recognising their services to the UK “internationally”.

Craig, who holds American citizenship and is listed by the Palace on the Investiture roll as being from “New York”, was given the CMG in the 2022 New Year Honours, in recognition of his “services to film and theatre”.

Princess Anne met the actor at Windsor Castle for the ceremony on Tuesday.

Her Majesty’s appearance in the sketch was the monarch’s own idea and in an appearance on The Late Show earlier this year, Craig recalled shooting with his famous co-star.

“We were having our photograph taken, and she just went, ‘Oh no, he’s the one that doesn’t smile’,” he revealed, describing Elizabeth II as “very funny”.
