Captain America: New World Order Director Reveals The Title’s Meaning

[ad_1]

Captain America: New World Order was announced by Marvel Studios at San Diego Comic-Con in July and director Julius Onah recently revealed the meaning behind the film’s title.

New World Order had been rumored to be the title of Marvel’s fourth Captain America movie long before it was finally announced. In Marvel’s comics, the New World Order is a villainous organization led by the Red Skull. “New World Order” was also the title of the first episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, the series that saw Sam Wilson’s first appearance as Captain America.

Julius Onah, who is set to helm the MCU’s fourth Captain America movie, has now revealed what the film’s subtitle means for Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.

In a recent interview with IGN, Julius Onah revealed the reasoning behind the title Captain America: New World Order, hinting at the differences in the world facing Sam Wilson compared to the world in which Steve Rogers operated.

The Marvel director revealed Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson will be faced with decisions and situations unlike anything audiences saw when Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers was wearing the stars and stripes. Onah also hinted at the massive implications of Sam’s decisions in the movie.

Julius Onah said of the title New World Order:

“What does that mean? The decisions he’s going to have to make, and the situations he’s going to be confronted with are radically different from what Steve Rogers had to deal with. And as a result of that, because he’s a leader, now, of this team, he’s got to make decisions that are going to have massive implications. So, the world has changed around him and he’s a changed man, and I think that leads to some really exciting storytelling.”

It sounds like Captain America: New World Order‘s title refers primarily to the changing state of the world, rather than the comics’ sinister organization – though, of course, this could be a double meaning and Tim Blake Nelson’s Leader could be set to take Red Skull’s place as the head of the New World Order.

In the same interview, Julius Onah addressed why Sam Wilson was the right man to take up Steve Rogers’ shield and how he is a new man following the events of Avengers: Endgame:

“Well, look, he is a different human being and coming from a different set of experiences. Back in [The Falcon and] The Winter Soldier, we saw what it means for somebody like him to take the shield. But it is also a very different MCU. It’s a post-blip MCU. It’s a post-Thanos MCU. So, the world has changed a lot too. And the role of a hero has changed.”

Exactly how far the changes in the world and in Sam Wilson’s Captain America go will be revealed when New World Order is released in 2024. It sounds like Sam is going to be faced with some tougher decisions than his predecessor.

The upcoming film will pick up with Anthony Mackie’s Captain America where the Disney Plus series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier left off. Here is the synopsis for the series:

Following the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience—in Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.”

Directed by Kari Skogland from scripts written by showrunner Malcolm Spellman and Derek Kolstad, the series stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Daniel Brühl as Baron Helmut Zemo, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent. Desmond Chiam, Miki Ishikawa, Noah Mills, and Carl Lumbly also appear.

The Falcon and the Winter Solider is currently available to stream on Disney Plus while Captain America: New World Order will release in theaters on May 3, 2024.
