Britney Spears backtracks ‘fat-shaming’ comments about Christina Aguilera’s dancers

[ad_1]

Britney Spears has reignited the age-old feud between her and Mickey Mouse Club House co-star Christina Aguilera, and it looks like things are going to get messy.

Spears, 40, has taken to Instagram to backtrack on problematic comments she made a day ago about Aguilera’s on-stage dancers, where she claimed that she would have felt “better” about her body if she’d had Aguilera’s dancers on stage instead of her own.

The Womanizer singer has immediately retracted the comments, which many called her out on, labelling them as “fat phobic” and “fat-shaming”.

The act may have come too little too late, however, as Aguilera, 41, has reportedly unfollowed Spears on Instagram.

“By no means was I being critical of Christina’s beautiful body, it is what it is !!!” Spears wrote in her new post, which features a drawing of two fairies holding hands.

“I flew to see her show once and the main thing I noticed was the difference of our people on stage !!! By no means did I even mention Christina, look at my post !!! I was inspired by her show and she is a beautiful woman of power … Thank you @xtina for inspiring me !!!”

She went on, “To be honest, I’m not trying to be critical of anybody. What I posted is a projection of the insecurities I deal with all the time as a result of how my parents and the media have treated me … I would never intentionally body shame anybody because I know what it feels like.”

Spears admitted she struggles with her own looks and explained that performing with her on-stage crew – which presumably didn’t reflect a body-inclusive, race-inclusive group of people – impacted how she felt about herself.

In her original post, Spears attempted to explain this, though the text post she chose to pair with her personal message definitely distracted from it.

Spears unfortunately shared a text post that featured an apparent quote from American comedian Rodney Dangerfield. It read: “I found there was only one way to look thin: Hang out with fat people.”

She then included her troublesome, and confusing caption: “I wish I could have chosen the nannies for my children … my dancers … I mean if I had Christina Aguilera’s dancers I would have looked extremely small 💃💃💃… I mean why not talk about it ??”

Spears continued: “Don’t you think my confidence would have been a bit better if I could choose where I lived, ate, whom I called on the phone, dated and who was on stage with me !!! It’s hard sometimes now I see how much of my womanhood was stripped away at that time and every person sat back and didn’t say a thing !!!”

She ended: “Anyways … I will be here talking bout things people NEVER talked about 🙄🙄🙄 !!!”

Understandably, fans were a little shocked by this post. While Spears usually receives waves of praise from her followers, the reaction was quite the opposite.

“Ooop this is far from cool, brit,” one person commented.

“Not the fat-shaming,” another wrote.

“Please delete this,” shared a third, while another fan called the post, “Offensive in so many ways.”

Unsurprisingly, Spears’ words have made their way to Aguilera, who has reportedly unfollowed her, but is yet to publicly reply to Spears.

Spears and Aguilera were child stars together on The Mickey Mouse Club House in 1993 and grew up as friends and competitors in the music industry.

Over the years, there has been some vicious back and forth between the stars, with public disses and their famous falling out following their MTV Video Music Awards performance with Madonna in 2003.

In 2004, Aguilera made the famous comment, “I know Britney. She’s not trailer trash, but she sure acts that way,” while being interviewed by US Weekly.
