A toddler’s outdoor birthday party at a Rexdale townhouse complex was the target of a “horrific” shooting that saw one man and three young kids injured Saturday evening.
Toronto Police say the gunfire erupted outside of 920 Tandridge Cr. — southeast of Albion and Islington Rds. — around 8 p.m.
“There was a birthday party going on for a one-year-old at the time,” Supt. Ron Taverner told reporters at the scene. “Obviously a horrific scene.”
“Unbelievable that this type of thing would happen,” he added.
Details were still emerging Saturday night but what was known is that four victims were taken to hospital.
Taverner said the victims include a 23-year-old man who was shot in the legs and three kids — a boy, 11, a girl, 5, and a one-year-old.
The extent of their injuries was not fully known.
However, it’s believed the baby was grazed and was being treated by paramedics at the scene but was expected to be transported to Sick Kids hospital where the other two children were being treated.
And police said one of the other children’s injuries were thought to be life-threatening.
“It’s unconscionable,” Taverner said, adding it’s “hard to believe” anyone could shooting up a child’s birthday party.
Taverner said it doesn’t appear that the victims were intentionally targeted.
“There has to be a reason why that particular party was being targeted, but I can’t answer right now as to the real motive of the shooting,” he said.
The shooter or shooters fled the scene in a vehicle.
Investigators are reviewing security video but no suspect descriptions were released.
