After months of controversy, North Star High School has been chosen as the name for the new dual-track high school now under construction in Amherstburg.
Trustees with the Greater Essex County District School Board were unanimous in their selection vote Tuesday. The other options under consideration were Southwest Unity, Southwest Alliance and Great Sauk Trail.
A volunteer naming committee spent months working on a short list of prospective names for the $24-million school that will replace General Amherst and Western Secondary. Many committee members became disenchanted and frustrated when preferred choices containing the name Amherstburg were rebuffed by board officials.
The chosen name refers to the skyward north star used for navigation. It served as a directional beacon for people escaping slavery in the United States via the Underground Railroad and has great symbolic importance to North American Indigenous cultures.
The new school is slated to open September 2022.
The school communities of General Amherst and Western Secondary will determine the school’s colours, nickname and mascot.
