Jarvis: What will they say? Unvaccinated doctors who lost hospital privileges request hearing

Three doctors at Windsor Regional Hospital have had their privileges suspended for failing to comply with the hospital’s mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy.

The hospital’s medical advisory committee is now recommending that the physicians’ privileges be revoked, meaning they could still practise but not at Windsor Regional.

At least one doctor at Erie Shores HealthCare in Leamington has been suspended for the same reason. CEO Kristin Kennedy wouldn’t disclose the number, saying that a breakdown of suspensions and terminations by position at a small hospital could identify the people.

Another doctor at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance and less than five at Bluewater Health in Sarnia and London Health Sciences Centre have also had their privileges suspended. Neither Bluewater or LHSC would disclose the exact number.

The number at each hospital is small, but it’s happening across Ontario, where 68 per cent of hospitals have mandatory vaccination policies for staff, according to the Ontario Hospital Association.

It’s a loss for a health care system already strained. But as British Columbia’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said Monday, if people in health care don’t recognize the importance of vaccination, “then this is probably not the right profession for them.”

The doctors here, who have not been identified, have requested hearings before their hospitals’ boards of directors.

What will they say?

It’s mind-boggling that physicians, of all people, would not only refuse to get vaccinated in a global pandemic but champion bizarre conspiracy theories.

But some are.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, which regulates doctors, has sanctioned three physicians. It has barred Dr. Mark Trozzi of Bancroft in eastern Ontario and Dr. Patrick Phillips of Englehart in northern Ontario from issuing medical exemptions for COVID-19 vaccines, testing and wearing masks.

Trozzi, on his website, refers to the “grand COVID deception” and “dangerous” COVID-19 vaccines, calls Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam a “double agent” and promotes the drug ivermectin. Health Canada has warned Canadians not to use ivermectin to treat COVID-19.

He writes that he resigned his hospital positions, forfeiting his income and forcing him to sell his house, “to help counter the criminal COVID enterprise.”

Phillips faces allegations of professional misconduct and has been referred to the discipline tribunal for allegedly making “misleading, incorrect or inflammatory statements about vaccinations, treatments and public health measures for COVID-19.”

The CPSO last week temporarily suspended the medical licence of Dr. Rochagne Kilian of Owen Sound, who has been a speaker at rallies organized by Grey-Bruce Freedom Fighters, a group opposed to vaccine mandates and passports. The suspension bars her from practising.

The college also announced Wednesday that it’s applying to Superior Court to compel four doctors — Trozzi, Kilian, Dr. Mary O’Connor of Ottawa and Dr. Celeste Thirlwell of North York — to cooperate with college investigations into their practices, including issuing medical exemptions for COVID-19 vaccination and testing.

The college alleges in its application notice regarding Kilian that she provides vaccination exemptions through Enable Air, a website that “facilitates the purchase of vaccination exemptions for a fee” and “describes the vaccine passport as a fascist document.”

The notice of application for Thirlwell alleges that the college was told that if it tries to get records from her office, “it will be resisted physically, by private security.”

The notice of application for O’Connor alleges that the college was told it must “define COVID-19.” It has also been requested to “advise if (the College) know(s) the ingredients of the ‘gene therapy experiments,’ the so-called vaccinations being administered to humanity without informed consent.”

Dr. Kulvinder Gill of Brampton has also been cautioned by the college for tweeting that there’s no need for a vaccine and lockdowns are “harmful” and “illogical.” She is appealing to the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board. An application for a judicial review has also been filed in Divisional Court.

The boards of directors of Windsor Regional and Erie Shores will decide the fates of the suspended physicians here. If the boards uphold the termination of their privileges, they can appeal to the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board and ultimately, the courts.

But it will be difficult for them to work at other hospitals.

“It’s very limited where you can go,” said Windsor Regional CEO David Musyj. “Even if a hospital in Ontario hasn’t fully implemented the policy we did, you have to be double-dosed to get hired.”

“Like Dr. Henry said,” Musyj said, “how one could be working in health care and living through this and not recognize the value and importance of vaccines at this time is extremely difficult to comprehend.”

Said OHA president Anthony Dale, “we know that unvaccinated employees place patients at risk and we must prioritize their safety to avoid outbreaks and other risks.”

Health care workers at hospitals must already show evidence of immunity against other infectious diseases from measles to tuberculosis when they’re hired.

“There is no reason to treat the COVID-19 vaccine any differently,” Dale stated.
